Harmony watched the old truck blaze a bouncy path to her door. It trailed a long plume of steam from the boiler retrofit that her brother, Eugene, had installed so he could run it off pond water. It was lower maintenance than the temperamental algae battery she had in her little sedan, but not as awe-inspiring as the nuclear engine she knew he’d had his eye on.
“Uncle Vern’s been drinking again. Get in the truck,” Eugene said as he pulled up in front of her door.
Harmony had friends who had been blessed with a good and simple life – marriage, children, and a comfortable home. She knew they frequently wondered when something terrible would befall them to atone for the blessings of theirs life. She knew that looking for the cloud in their silver lining caused them great stress and worry. Harmony didn’t have those worries.
She had the other kind.

I don't read much short fiction -- it seems to be a dying art, at least as far as Science Fiction is concerned. This piece is an excellent example of that art. It was very entertaining. Excellent characterization, a clear beginning, middle, and end with conflict that held my interest. A few nits kept me from giving it five stars: The bad guys seemed particularly inept and easy to defeat, and there were a couple of editing issues that stood out in such a short piece. However, it is well worth the price on Amazon. The author should use this as the nucleus of a novel. It's a shame to waste that much good world building on just a short story.Product details

Loved this story. It would make a great pilot for a TV series. Characters are vivid and the plot is vibrant and intriguing. Heroine is a girl after my own heart. But I want to be the Riot girl. Non-stop action and great ending. More, please!
